After three months of being here (and eating everything we can find!) here’s my highly subjective list of the best tacos in La Paz.
Fish Taco: Taco Fish, Taco de Pescado. Wow–I’m not even a huge fish taco fan normally, but these are the best! They fry entire fish filets and then cut a piece when you order exactly to fit the tortilla. Fix to your liking with all of the accompanying toppings, and its amazing! Interestingly, fish tacos are generally viewed as breakfast by locals here—so any place you go will likely close early. You can see more about this place in Netflix’s Taco Chronicles (Season 2, Pescado)!
**Tie for best overall taco in La Paz.
Carnitas Taco: Tacos de Carnitas Don Abhraham. It’s hard to say what you’ll notice first—the porky smell or the huge line of people. This street cart offers up delicious carnitas available by the taco or by the ½ kilo, served on a corn tortilla. It’s so popular that it often sells out by noon or 1.
**Tie for best overall taco in La Paz.
Shrimp Taco: Mc-Fisher, Taco de Cameron Capeado. Shrimps in a light batter fried up to golden deliciousness.
Honorable mention: Claro Fish Jr, Taco de Cameron de Coco. When these are fried well, they like a perfect end of meal treat—like a slightly sweet dessert taco (of shrimp). Each taco gets 3 huge shrimp coated in batter, rolled in coconut and fried. Cameron de Coco is not the kiddie dish you think of in La Paz but something everyone eats. Sadly, sometimes they are not as good—I think the oil is too hot, and the coconut pieces get overcooked.
Lobster Taco: Bismarkcito, Taco Langosta. While a bit more of a touristy restaurant, the great location gives you a people-watching and water view seated among tourists and locals alike. The lobster taco is very fresh and filled with rich, juicy lobster.
Crab Taco: Taco Fish, Taco Jaiba. (Yes, a second taco from Taco Fish La Paz.) This fried taco is filled with a local shredded crab mixture that will remind you of Maryland blue crabs.
Al Pastor Taco: Los Faroles, Taco al Pastor. Tacos al pastor are one of my favorites, but not so common in La Paz. The best we found were in this family-run place across from an Aramburo grocery store. Sliced freshly off the spit and topped with sweet pineapple.
Searching for the best taco is one of the “must-do” activities in any Mexican town. However, if you don’t have time to just randomly eat everywhere, this list will get you to some of the best!
