A list of our favorite foods from around Antigua, Guatemala.
Finca San Cayetano: About 30 minutes outside of town. We went here for Mr Snack’s birthday and were treated to a delicious dinner with a stunning view of the erupting volcano. As its part of an upscale hotel, their menu has everything from pizzas to steaks.
Caoba Farms: On the southern edge of town, this adorable farm has tables tucked in various green spaces and the food comes from ingredients grown on the farm.
La Cuevita de Los Urquizu: A restaurant that serves lots of local Guatemalan dishes. You can see the majority of the dishes stewing in clay pots up front. Delicious soups and the location of my favorite rellenitos de plantanos.
Refracciones y Papusas Odilia: This is essentially a hallway with a woman who makes food. Made to order papusas plus other food that changes by the day. Mr Snacks declared this place the home to some of the best fried chicken he’s ever had!
Café Estudio: There’s two reasons that this place became one of our regular stops. One is that they make my favorite hot chocolate in the whole town. Two is that the views from their roof terrace overlooking the erupting volcano is pretty special.
Lo-Mix/Bar Carlos: Even though the name changed to Lo-Mix about 20 years ago, the local who gave us this intel still called it Bar Carlos. Get ready for an insanely large seafood soup—it’s huge and you’ll be stuffed, but also wear a shirt that will survive picking through piles of crab, shrimp and snails.
Maxán: Inside this hostel is a small but tasty restaurant focused on contemporary takes on Guatemalan foods. Smaller portions, but well-executed and great prices. Also, great drinks.
Fermento: A lovely patio space with live music in the evenings. Food changes, but we had dishes such as pulled pork, brown butter gnocchi and pork belly tacos.
Doña Maria Gordillio: The candy place! Most of the items from my desserts post came from here.
La Tienda Doña Gavi: Artesian ice cream. A huge list of flavors you never dreamed of. My favorite was avocado.
